A doula is a woman who provides physical, emotional, and informational support to families during pregnancy, labour, and the early postpartum. Why invite a doula to your birth?A doula is a familiar person who will be there for you. They take the time to get to know you prenatally and work with you to understand your birth wishes. Having a familiar person in labour can help to alleviate some of the fears with the 'unknown' of birth. A doula believes in your body's ability to give birth in the way that works best for you. How do doulas work with partners?Partners and doulas work together as a team. A doula encourages partners to be as active in the birth as they are comfortable. She does this by meeting with families prenatally to practice different comfort techniques for labour. She can also help guide the partner during labour to support mom - a doula can always provide you with more ideas as the labour progresses. A doula can also allow a partner to get a break for food, update the waiting family, or use the bathroom without leaving mom alone. How is a doula different from a nurse or midwife?Midwives and nurses have are your experts in clinical care. Doulas do not perform clinical tasks like exams or taking blood pressure. As such, we devote our attention to your needs both physical and emotional. We can also help explain procedures and help you explore options and alternatives that may be right for you.Still wondering if a doula is right for you? This is a big decision and you should take the time to see which doula is the right fit for you and your growing family. We offer a FREE interview so we can get to know each other and see if we would be able to provide the support you are looking for. Contact us by e-mail
